The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has published evidence-based recommendations for weight loss and to summarise their findings:
Cardio exercise will be more effective than weight training at decreasing body fat if you do more than 150 minutes per week. Weight training is better than cardio for building muscle which leads to continued burning of calories after you have finished exercising. A combination of cardio and strength training is the best method for improving your body composition and burning the most calories.
