Apples - in season and good for you!

Our seasonal food of the month for September is the humble APPLE.

Well you know what they say..."An apple a day keeps the doctor away" and it's not surprising when this fruit is full of pectin, antioxidants and also contains vitamins A, C, K and B7.

 

They are rich in antioxidants that help to protect our cells from free radical damage, and they also contain dietary fibre which is needed to support a healthy digestive system.

Vitamins A and C support the immune system, vitamin K which is needed for blood clotting, biotin (vitamin B7) helps to break down fat, and they also contain iodine which helps with healthy thyroid function.

The pectin that apples contain is a natural fibre found in most plants and recent research shows it has a cholesterol-lowering effect.

Apples are also low on the glycaemic index which helps with weight management and preventing diabetes.

 

Did you know that there are over 7,000 varieties of apple in existence, many of which are grown in the UK however only around 12 varieties are commonly sold in our supermarkets, and a lot of those are imported!

 

There are two categories of apples: 
- eating, which include: Cox's Orange Pippin, Golden Delicious, Granny Smiths and Braeburn
- or cooking (which are more tart in flavour) such as: Bramley (the most well known), Blenheim Orange, Grenadier, Reverend W Wilkes and Ida Red.

 

British apples are available all year round but traditionally they are coming into season now through to February.
